Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch is an amazing website that all seafood lovers should check out!
Their mission is to inform and educate people about the issues affecting our oceans’ populations and give advice on where to obtain sustainable cuisine from the sea.
The site is very user friendly and you can even download a mobile app. You can search restaurants, fisheries, and geographical locations to determine if the products they offer are sustainable and farmed in ways that do not negatively impact the environment.
Seafood Watch rates various sources into one of three categories:
- Best Choices
- Good Alternatives
- Avoid
There are detailed criteria reports so you know exactly how each organization received their score as well.
Even if you aren’t a fan of seafood, the site also explains different issues that are affecting our oceans and their populations and what you can do to help. Some of the issues they address are wild seafood, fishing and farming methods, and aquaculture.
The site began in 1999 and they have over 330 partners across North America working to educate the world about our planet’s oceans and the food derived from them.
So before you go out to the grocery or restaurant to purchase your next seafood meal, please remember to check out Seafood Watch and see if your source is sustainable!
