To hear that whales are beaching themselves is just disturbing, but seven whales is too much.
The reason behind this behavior might have been due to oil drilling in the vicinity of Adriatic beach, according to the Environmental Protection Authority.
The seven sperm whales must have been deeply disturbed by the oil drilling to have beached themselves. The ordeal was captured on camera and tons of people were on site trying to do anything they could do to help.
Reading about this incident is heartbreaking enough, but seeing the video brings it all together. Four of the whales died from beaching that day. The mayor of Vasto described the event as “one of the worst environmental disasters in the region.”
I don’t know about you, but whenever I hear about something as sad as this, one question immediately pops into my head: could this have been prevented?
For me the answer is yes. This is 2014 and the amount of research available to the drilling companies is vast– research that could have possibly shown them that the area they chose to drill in could have a negative effect on the marine life who call that particular area home.
These companies need to take the time to think before they drill.
Determine the possible effects the drilling will have on the wonderful creatures of the deep. If the impact will be negative, then no drilling should take place, even if that changes their bottom line!
