Visitors to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta are about to get some fun new flippered friends with the announcement that the Georgia Aquarium will be bringing California sea lions to their word class aquarium!
Since opening in 2005 the over 2,000,000 visitors a year have been able to get up close with dolphins, beluga whales, whale sharks, manta rays, sea otters and more at a state the art facility that inspires its visitors to protect and conserve marine life around the world.
The $40 million expansion to the aquarium comes at a perfect time when sea lions in the wild are facing incredible threats. On the west coast they have been experience an “Unusual Mortality Event” with thousands of starving sea lion pups being found on the the California coastline.
The Georgia Aquarium is hoping to have this new area open by 2016 for guests to get up close and person with some amazing animals, who can help connects guests to their wild cousins who are in desperate need of help on the west coast.
