What’s more romantic than two people spending the early hours of the morning watching the sunrise by the ocean?
Probably nothing … unless you add some crabbing to the mix. Like the Blue Crab, this under-rated date idea has been hiding just beneath surface waiting for someone to come scoop it up.
A crabbing adventure is best done during the warmer summer months and into September when the crabs are abundant and have had time to grow. However, if you would like to cozy up to your date during the process, it can also be done year round (depending on your state’s laws).
If you picture your date ending in the actual catching of crustaceans, then it is recommended that you go in the early morning or in the hours before, during and after high tide.
Fun Fact: You get bonus points if you manage to catch enough for dinner!
Finding the perfect place for crabbing simply involves traveling to the nearest coast and setting the mood at any small dock or bay, especially one where the nearby water is moving. If you want to ensure the day’s success, ask some of the locals or do some research on the best place to go near your area. Once there, set up some folding chairs to relax and prepare your tools, making sure the crab (and you) are both a great catch.
For crabbing beginners an easy, inexpensive method would be the Line and Net. All you need is a line (fishing line or nylon string) and a dip net with a long enough handle that will help you safely retrieve your salty prize.
Next, make sure to get some bait that a crab would love to get its claws on, and for some reason crabs LOVE chicken. Pre-date pick up some raw chicken (with bones) from any grocery store and bring it with you to tie the line onto.
With poultry attached, toss the bait into the water and hold the other end of the line waiting for that tell-tale tug. If you’re lucky enough to feel it, slowly reel in your crab and scoop it up with your net. As long as the crab complies with the state laws, then congratulations! You have caught a winner, and hopefully your date thinks the same thing about you.
Happy crabbing!
