Humpback whales are on the move and clearly looking for attention! This massive whale breached just meters away from the boat, only to have its audience look the other way.
Off the coast of Sydney, Australia whale watching has recently been quite popular and successful in catching sightings But encounters as close as this one do not happen very often.
The clueless observers were eyeing some activity on the right, while the sight of a lifetime was towering above them on their left. The group knew the whales were fairly close under the surface because they were keeping the boat at a distance to follow regulations. But they were caught off guard as the gigantic splash set them straight for not paying attention.
John Goodridge, a regular whale watcher, was the man with the lucky shot. He had his camera ready on a boat 500 meters behind the tour group and snapped one of the funniest pictures in whale watching history.
Although the tour missed one of the most spectacular jumps, the tour group did get to see other humpbacks breaching. And hey, any whale sighting is exciting.
But, we can only imagine the group’s faces after going home and looking at this photo in hindsight!
