Complete with sprawling, white sand beaches and endless crystal blue water, the Hawaiian Islands may just be Heaven on Earth. If you are planning your next vacation in paradise, there are some things you probably should know about the flora and fauna. This short countdown will give you an idea of what to expect while spending time in the North Pacific.
1. Crown of Thorns Starfish
If scuba diving is on your bucket list, make sure to keep an eye out for these spiny little buggers. When touched, the spines emit a gelatinous venom which causes bleeding and immediate swelling at the victim’s point of contact. As bottom-dwellers, interaction with them is infrequent and they definitely won’t sneak up on you.
2. Reef sharks
Worried about seeing that triangular fin poking out of the water while you are out in the open? The Hawaiian coastline has many species of sharks – they enjoy paradise as much as we do.
Sharks in Hawaii are usually docile and not a cause for concern. Just make sure to use caution when snorkeling at the surface, as most sharks confuse swimmers with sea turtles (their favorite prey!).

3. Box Jellyfish
Now, this mass of gelatin will in fact sneak up on you. Jellyfish are the most troublesome for vacationers because they are silent swimmers, difficult to see, and they have no fear of beachgoers. Their tentacles pack a whopper of a sting, which usually has to be treated by a medical professional. Chances of spotting a jelly are higher about ten days after a full moon.
4. Sea Urchin
As the most frequently encountered by guests of Hawaii, sea urchins are not deadly, but rather annoying. And not to mention painful! When stepped on, they can embed their spines right into the bottom of your foot. So, don’t forget your water shoes when wading along the tidal coastline.

5. Moray Eel
This small, but mighty sea dweller hides among the coral and in rock formations underwater. Fish are its main prey, but make sure not to stick your hands in any underwater crevices or you might find your fingers on the menu.
Traveling to a new place can be the most thrilling adventure, and taking your safety into consideration will make your vacation that much more enjoyable. The Hawaiian Islands would not be the beautiful paradise they are today if not for their natural wonders. Enjoy!
