Ben Hooper is a 38 year old British man, an ex-cop and, hopefully, soon to be the first person to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. That is, if he can overcome the many obstacles that have already thrown off his projected finish date by months.
His 3,000 mile trek began on November 13th and was expected to take just 140 days. Today marks day 51, and Hooper has swam a mere 67 nautical miles. “Jellyfish sting me repeatedly every day,” Hooper laments. “We have now seen sharks on two confirmed occasions.”
Jellyfish and sharks aren’t Hooper’s only problem. Just a couple weeks into his journey, a medic had to remove a sea moth that was nesting in his left ear.
His next leg of the swim will bring him through shark breeding grounds. Still, despite the pain and danger, Hooper remains committed to proving that anything is possible. Only time will tell what the seas have in store for this man.
