Photos like these take patience, and Jem Cresswell, the Sydney-based photographer of this series, certainly has it. He spent three years swimming in the wake of humpbacks, riding their waves to the Tongo’s Vava’s Island and back during each annual migration.
“[I] was initially drawn to the whales’ gentle nature, sheer size and the feeling of insignificance in their presence,” says Cresswell.
Cresswell took more than 10,000 photos during his three expeditions, most of which he chose to feature in a timeless black and white “representing how long these creatures have been around for.
