The Alaska SeaLife Center received some stellar news this past week from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, also known as the AZA. After almost two decades of providing wildlife education and relief, they have been accredited by the AZA. This is a big deal to say the least.
The Seward, AK based organization underwent a rigorous review to assure that it has and will continue to successfully meet the notoriously high AZA standards. These standards include animal care and welfare, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety. In order to continue being members of the Association, the ASLC will need to complete the thorough accreditation process every 5 years.
President and CEO, Tara Riemer announced this statement regarding the accreditation: “Earning this accreditation means that the Alaska SeaLife Center, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, meets the highest standards for providing quality care to wildlife, as well as its commitment to protecting the future of arctic and sub-arctic animal species.
“Over the past 18-years, the Alaska SeaLife Center has risen to international prominence for its scientific research, wildlife response, and education programs – and most recently for our cutting edge green technology. In acknowledging this achievement, we wish to thank the thousands of Alaskans who continue to support the Center through visits, charitable contributions and numerous partnerships.”
The AZA was founded in 1924 and has since dedicated its existence to the advancement of zoos and aquariums, conservation, education, science, and recreation. With over 200 facilities meeting the highest standards set forth by the AZA, the Alaska SeaLife Center is joining a prestigious and elite group.
