Earlier this week in the Norwegian Sea, while leading a group of photographers on an underwater expedition, Patrick Dykstra was almost swallowed by a 35,000 pound humpback whale!
The Picture Adventure Expeditions owner was photographing a pod of orca whales that were feeding on a giant bait ball, recalling, “They were using their tails to round up a nice big ball of herring.” Then before he knew it, the humpback whale charged up from the deep.
Lucky for us, the whole encounter was caught on film. Fasten your seat belts.
The underwater photographer mentioned, “It’s hard to tell from the video, but the whale swerved last minute to avoid hitting me,” and continuing, “It’s fascinating how something so big and moving so fast could avoid me last minute. They’re incredibly intelligent creatures that know exactly where they are.”
Dykstra commented that being so close to something so big was probably the greatest moment of his life. After swimming with whales for close to 20 years, he can now say he’s officially seen it all!
