Over the past couple of weeks, offshore killer whales have been making their way to Monterey Bay. This particular ecotype of orca is smaller than the Bigg’s or transient killer whales and they typical inhabit deeper waters far from shore.
A photographer aboard the 9 AM Monterey Bay Whale Watch tour dispatched a drone (of course) to capture not only incredible footage of the pod, but the aftermath of what was likely an EPIC ocean battle. One of the whales was spotted carrying a sevengill shark carcass in its mouth. Uh we’re not surprised the orca reigned supreme.
Offshore orca whales are known for traveling in larger pods of 20-75, but this sighting was extra special because there were several calves along for the migration too. Aww wittle whale babies…
Thankfully for us, the Monterey based tour guide group posted the AWESOME ariel footage to their Facebook page. YAS.
