BIG NEWS: SeaWorld Antonio has officially partnered up with the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network!
For over 50 years SeaWorld has created a vigilant tradition of rescuing close to 30,000 animals. It looks like they’ll be expanding their rescue efforts by partnering up with TMMSN.
SeaWorld Antonio currently works with the Stranding Network assisting marine mammals on the Texas coast. Today’s announcement is a significant step in their already budding relationship.
Over the next three years, SeaWorld San Antonio will dedicate over $1 million in funding and resources, along with having SeaWorld animal care professionals and veterinarians committed to work with the Stranding Network. Also, the SeaWorld Antonio is committed to building a new state-of-the-art facility at the park where they will provide 24/7 care for sick and stranded animals that need long term rehabilitation.
Chris Bellows, who is the Vice President of Zoological Operations at SeaWorld San Antonio, commented on the new partnership, “TMMSN is one of the nation’s most dedicated animal rescue organizations, relentless in its work to help marine mammals in the wild.” Bellows continued, “I am personally and professionally moved by the many volunteers who tirelessly donate their time and energy. It is a pleasure to work alongside the TMMSN and offer our professional resources as we join together to help rescue and rehabilitate stranded animals with the shared goal of returning them to the wild.”
The partnership could not have come at a more crucial time. Winter is coming. As the water temperature drop and January approaches on our calendars, the annual stranding season begins. The TMMSN typically can see up to 150 stranded or injured marine mammals each year along the Texas coast, with the most common being the bottlenose dolphin.
