The US Coast Guard out of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California got a special guest on their boat, late last week! A juvenile sea lion who hopped right onto their vessel.
Well, after a little persuasion, that is.
The little guy had been hooked and caught in some fishing gear, in need of rescue, which the Coast Guard was happy to try and help with— and they did exactly the right thing!
The crew’s Facebook page announced that shortly after pulling the little guy free of the gear and coaxing him onboard, they called the Pacific Marine Mammal Center— well, maybe after the friendly little sea lion posed for a picture or two.
The sea lion, now named “Whiskers”, thanks to the Station LA/LB crew, was transported to a nearby dock in Newport Beach so that the PMMC could come on board and safely recover him and “whisk” him away to one of their rescue facilities, where he had a fish hook, line and lure in need of removal.
We want to second the gratitude of both the USG and Marine Mammal Center by saying a big “thank you!” to everyone involved in rescuing Whiskers!
