What scientists first thought was biologically impossible… is actually very possible. A stunning coral reef was discovered off the coast of South America: The Amazon Reef.
The new ocean wonder was first discovered last year during an expedition off the coast of Brazil. This particular piece of ocean is where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Hello Gorgeous:
Located just 721 feet below the sea surface and 62 miles from the shore, scientists from Greenpeace’s ship Esperanza struck exploration gold.
The team used a submarine to wander along the 600 mile reef system, spanning from French Guyana to Brazil’s Maranhão. The spectacular reef system includes corals, sponges and rhodoliths in an approximately 3,600 square mile area.
Not only does this system have a unique use of light and water conditions, but experts believe that they’ll be able to identify a plethora of new species.
