The showdown of the century is upon us. That’s right, Michael Phelps will be going head to head with a great white shark. As part of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, Phelps will be racing a great white shark during its kick off on July 23, according to a press release. The highly anticipated event “Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White” will be a face-off between the world’s most decorated athlete and the ocean’s most efficient predator.
Phelps has won 23 Olympic gold medals and set 39 world records, but does this highly decorated athlete have what it takes to take down one of the world’s most impressive predators? He has nothing left to prove against humans, so Phelps is looking for the next best competition: sharks. Phelps took to Instagram to express his excitement.
The specifics of the event have not yet been clarified. Many of us are wondering how Phelps will steer clear of the shark’s endless rows of teeth during the race, along with informing the shark that it is even involved in a race. How will it know when to start? How will it know where the finish line is? Whatever the case, this is going to be epic.
Not enough Phelps vs. sharks for you? Tune into Shark Week on Discovery Channel to see Phelps swim within two feet of a hammerhead shark in “Shark School with Michael Phelps” airing on July 30. It’s going to be a hell of a Shark Week people, you don’t want to miss out.
