If you saw a sea turtle stranded on the beach, what would you do? Would you know what the correct course of action is? It is very possible that most of us (and most of the public) do not know what to do.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, New Jersey is trying to change that. The center is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating all sorts of marine life. One of the things they do is help sea turtles that are stranded on the beach. They realized that most people don’t know what to do if they see a sea turtle on the beach, so they decided to host a summer program for kids.
Education coordinator for this program, Sarah Miele said, “It’s really important to start at a young age, just to really drive it home and make them understand.”
The bottom line is that the rescues should be left to the experts. If you see a stranded animal, you should call the proper authorities in your state. Miele also pointed out that “It’s very important that we all learn so we can keep the ocean clean and make sure this doesn’t happen to most sea turtles and any marine mammals.”
