He was first spotted off the coast of New South Wales by Byron Bay in June of 1991. Researchers believe he was about eight to ten years old when he was first spotted. His age is a very impressive number because albinism usually indicates larger health problems, but Migaloo has just kept swimming for the past 26 years.
Migaloo is not an average whale, and he also is not an average albino. His eyes are brown instead of the classic pink associated with albinism. DNA testing through the Australian Marine Mammal Centre determined that he was definitely an albino though. The testing also confirmed that he is indeed a male.
Recently another white humpback whale was spotted off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The whale was a newborn calf that was given the name Chalkie, but his nickname is Migaloo Jr.
