Picasso the sea turtle was recently released back to sea into the Gulf of Mexico, but carrying a little more than just his body weight!
Picasso was carrying the ashes of the founder of a rehabilitation center and oceanographer, Tony Amos. Hurricane Harvey destroyed his Animal Rehabilitation Keep for sea turtles and aquatic birds that he has run for almost 40 years.
Amos, also known as “The Guardian of the Gulf”, died September 4th after a long battle of pancreatic cancer. Amos’s ashes were sprinkled by his son on a turtle’s shell and released into the gulf. Hundreds gathered for a memorable ceremony on the beach in Port Aransas.
