Everyone needs a good nap sometimes, even sperm whales. Recently, a pack of 12 of these massive creatures was spotted in the sea of a Scottish island on the coast of Tiumpan.
In an interview with Steve Dodd, a local volunteer observer for The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Shorewatch Group, he explained the rarity of seeing these whales on the Scottish coast, especially seeing them resting.
Sperm whales are truly incredible creatures. Their brains can weigh up to a whopping 17 pounds, which is roughly 5 ½ times bigger than that of a human. Also, unlike other whale species, the sperm whale maintains the title for being the toothed predator known to man.
Another little-known fact is that sperm whales are incredible divers. They can descend to astounding depths of over 3,300 feet while also being able to hold their breath for a period of 90 minutes! On these dives, they communicate using long distance clicks that can be heard from miles away.
