Melon-headed whales are relatively unknown whales; they spend their lives in deep waters and lead a pelagic life. For this reason, not many people get the chance to see these whales in person.
Unfortunately, a rescue team recently saw a melon-headed whale in distress on the west coast of Florida. Luckily for the whale, the team was about to save it on October 13th. The rescue effort was a cooperation between the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The rescue mission went very well for the whale and was transported to a waiting veterinary team at Sea World Orlando.
The goal is to get him healthy enough to return to the wild soon. For now, he remains in critical condition, but this watchful staff will help to keep him on the narrow road to recovery.
