A viral video of a dolphin getting a belly rub from a snorkeler off Inis Oirr, Ireland has prompted wildlife experts to warn people about approaching wildlife such as dolphins. While the dolphin in the video below seems to enjoy the human interaction, that’s not always the case and dolphins can have a grumpy side. The best way to handle a wild dolphin encounter is to be cautious and let them approach you. They are curious by nature so chances are you’ll get an up close look.
On the other hand, you can come across dolphins that aren’t in such a friendly mood. The video below was taken in 2015 in Galway, Ireland and shows an agitated dolphin, known locally as Dusty, pushing a swimmer aggressively. This is a reminder that dolphins are in fact wild animals and that you never know how they will react to human interaction.
So as a rule, treat all wildlife, including dolphins, with an abundance of caution, as you never know how they will react to your presence. Dolphins have a reputation for being friendly and fun, but be aware that they have moods just like people and other animals and can be less than hospitable. They deserve a healthy dose of respect.
