Scientist recently collected more than 100 different species of fish during the Sampling the Abyss voyage.
Amongst the 100 fish, some were new to science and will be examined by the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) Australian Fish Collection.
“The survey collected some very rare and unusual species, and represents one of the deepest collections of fish from Australian waters” said Alistair Graham, manager of the Australian National fish Collection.
These hideous fish were found at the depths of up to 4,800 meters.
Now being in the running for the ugliest fish, a previous title holder has some completion. Mr. Blobby was voted the World’s Ugliest Fish in 2013.
Alistair Graham said: ‘The abyss is the largest and deepest habitat on the planet, covering half the world’s oceans and one third of Australia’s territory, but it remains the most unexplored environment on earth.
Dr. Martin Goman, an ichthyologist from Museums Victoria, expressed that Sampling the Abyss was the first systematic approach to look into the depths of the ocean off of the Australian coast.
