If you love Awesome Ocean, then you probably love stories about the sea and what is being done to preserve and conserve the life beneath the surface. So we think you’ll be excited about the new My Ocean podcast from our friends at Ocean Wise.
The new bi-weekly series is hosted by Alexis Brown and has four episodes so far, and they put the spotlight on individuals doing groundbreaking and just plain awesome work to help our oceans. Each episode dives deep with an individual who is a leader in conservation and who has paved their own unconventional way to protect the planet. It will inspire and educate listeners on how they can make a difference too.
Episode one centers on California-based entrepreneurial neuroscientist Wallace J. Nichols. He focuses on the cognitive, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual benefits of healthy oceans and waterways. He refers to this movement and science as the “Blue Mind.” His vision is of a world where water therapy (like surfing) is prescribed along with traditional medicine. He knows that conservation is critical for humans to reap the myriad benefits of bodies of water.
The second episode features Karina Oliani, a Brazilian-based TV personality and a doctor with a specialization in wilderness medicine. She’s also a record-setting wakeboarder and a dedicated hiker who has climbed Everest twice. She’s taken her love of adrenaline and all things outdoors and turned her attention to ocean conservation. Her photo shoots see her getting up close with sharks while wearing ornate evening gowns or flowing fabric. The stunning photos make a statement about how humans and nature (even predators) can exist in harmony.
Episode three 0f the My Ocean podcast features Jess Schultz, who is a marine ecologist with the Howe Research Group, which is part of the Coastal Ocean Research Institute, an Ocean Wise initiative. Schultz turned to marine science in an unusual place. She discovered her passion for the field after reading a book while serving in Afghanistan. She works to breathe life back into the Howe Sound. Wildlife in the Sound was largely destroyed by industrial pollution during the 20th century.
A fourth episode has been released, focusing on the need to conserve “ugly” species. The My Ocean podcast can be found on Google Play, iTunes, or on My Ocean page on the Ocean Wise site.
