The Kansas City Zoo is looking forward to welcoming another polar bear into its family. Bam Bam is a thirty-year-old female bear that is coming from Omaha, Nebraska to settle into her new home.
Bam Bam was born in November of 1987 at the Henry Doorly Zoo and has always been a favorite among both the visitors and the staff. She will share her new home with Berlin, a 28-year-old female that has called the Kansas City Zoo home since December of 2012.
It is hoped that their similar ages and temperaments will allow them to become good friends and company in the 18,000-square foot enclosure that they will call home. The habitat, “Polar bear Passage, was built for three bears, so it will accommodate both of them comfortably.
Bam Bam is scheduled to arrive in Kansas City sometime this month, but you will not be able to see her in her new home right away. The staff wants to give Bam Bam some time to adjust to her new home before allowing the public to see her. The time behind the scenes will also allow for Berlin and Bam Bam to slowly adjust to each other’s presence. All of this should be done by the summer though, so you will be able to see Bam Bam in her new home soon!
