Monterey Bay Aquarium has teamed up with New Wave Foods to serve its visitor’s vegan shrimp at its onsite café. This is great news because according to the CEO of New Wave Foods, Dominique Barnes, “Shrimp can be or (has) the highest bycatch ratio of any wild-caught seafood items. So, for everybody of shrimp that comes up you can get up to five or six pounds of other animals that often get discarded overboard.”
These vegan shrimp allow for a more sustainable option in the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The shrimp are algae-based instead of animal-based food. If you want to try these shrimp without going to the aquarium, then you can order them online at Veestro, which is a vegan meal delivery service.
It is always important to look for sustainable products when it comes to the ocean. If everyone buys seafood that is caught unsustainably, then it will lead to fisheries collapsing worldwide. Fishery collapse is not just a made up term, on smaller scale fisheries are collapsing around the world due to overfishing and unsustainable harvests. In order to prevent further collapses, plant-based products and farm-raised fish will become more important over time.
