The dolphin was reportedly washed up with many wounds where other tourists and villagers gathered to watch, this is when said tourist drove off with the dolphin in his car and nobody noticed the license plate.
The South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute identifies the animal as a false killer whale, a class-II protected species in China. False killer whales’ population are not protected due to extinction but are controlled to ensure survival.
“Whether the dolphin was dead or not, it is a protected animal and it was not right for him to take it away,” said an official from the ocean and fisheries administration.
Chinese authorities are reviewing this incident and identified the man featured in the video, he will face punishment.
