Imagine you are on a beach in the Galapagos Islands, the remote island that is famed for its biodiversity. Do you expect there to be any plastic there? I wouldn’t, just based on the fact that it is many miles from the mainland of South America.
If you assumed there wouldn’t be any trash, then you were wrong. Recently, Tui De Roy stumbled upon a trashy scene and had to intervene.
She spotted some young sea lions playing in the tide pools by the shore. Although she was that “It was wonderful to see how the pups enjoyed their new toy to play with, they were so excited it was hilarious.” She eventually took the plastic sheet away from the young animals.
It is sad to realize just how wide spread plastic is. These young sea lions were on an island, in the middle of the ocean but they were still affected by human plastic trash. The pervasive problem needs to be stopped.
Everyone can help make a difference in the fight against plastic in our ocean. Simply use less plastic, recycle better or even participate in a beach cleanup! All of these little things will add up. If everyone pitches in, then maybe we will see a plastic free ocean one day!
