A new exhibit recently opened at the Vancouver Aquarium. The display is an art exhibit by Douglas Coupland called Vortex.
The eye-opening display is constructed entirely of plastic and other trash that washed up on British Columbia’s shores. It is hoped that display of trash will help the viewers to really understand the impact that plastic is having on our oceans.
Coupland said that he was inspired to create something like this when he started finding plastic bottles on the beach that he used to collect in Tokyo. Plastic is everywhere in the ocean and unfortunately, it is a growing problem.
More plastic is dumped into the ocean every day (along with other kinds of trash). Although all trash is bad, plastic seems to have the most negative effect on our oceans and the animals that call it home. Plastic bags are eaten by all kinds of animals who then starve to death because they cannot digest the plastic in order to eat real food. Plastic straws are found in the noses of sea turtles, often causing them to die a slow and painful death. Microplastics are found pervasively through the entire ocean are wreaking havoc on animals, and we don’t even understand the full extent of it yet.
As the problems grow, the best thing you can do is to avoid single-use plastics and if you see trash flying around, then please pic kit up and throw it in a proper receptacle.
