The famous dolphin “Babyface” has shown up again off the coast of southwest Florida. The dolphin made the news three years ago after an encounter with a boat left it with nasty cuts on its tail.
NOAA and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium were called to assist the injured dolphin, but after a visual assessment, the team decided that the dolphin would be better off healing in its natural environment. The crew monitored the injured dolphin as it recovered off the coast of Miami.
The nine-year-old dolphin seemed to make a full recovery and the teams stopped monitoring him as closely. However, photographer Doc Jon recognized the dolphin based on its scars in Madeira Beach earlier this month.
The dolphin seemed to be moving well despite the still visible scars on its tail. The story of Babyface shows just how resilient wild dolphins can be. Although it great that we can care for sick and injured dolphins, it is nice to know that even the ones we cannot help turn out alright sometimes.
You cannot help but feel happy for this once unlucky dolphin who seems to have recovered and is enjoying her life completely now. Hopefully, her life will continue happily for a long time.
