The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is providing an easy way for the public to support their efforts into rescue, research, and management of some of the most beloved marine species in the state.
The two animals that would be supported by decal purchases are sea turtles and manatees. Over 6,000 manatees call Florida waters home and over 20,000 sea turtles use Florida’s coastline for nesting purposes. You can buy awareness decals for a 5-dollar donation at local tax collector office.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in helping fund the research that will help sea turtles and manatees thrive in our waters. The head of FWC’s Imperiled Species Management Section said, “Florida provides critical habitats for manatees and sea turtles. Public support is making a difference in helping us conserve these imperiled species.”
The two decals have important messages embedded in their image. The manatee decal shows a group of manatees which marks the progress from an endangered to threatened status. The sea turtle decal has the slogan “shield your lights for a sea turtle friendly night.” The saying is a reminder to help keep the light levels near the beach down so that sea turtles can nest safely on our shores.
You can buy either of these decals from now until the end of October. Consider buying one to help spread the message of marine conservation throughout the state of Florida.
