Last month, the Adventure Aquarium in Camden celebrated a special birthday. Genny the Hippo
celebrated her 18th birthday! It was a special day filled with vegan cookie cakes for Genny.
The park guests also had a chance to celebrate with fun crafts!
Genny’s friend Button, another hippo at Adventure Aquarium, was happy to join in the
celebration and enjoy all of the special treats for the day. The two hippos have been friends for
many years.
Although she is turning 18, Genny has been fully mature for many years. In fact, hippos
generally mature between three to four years old, even if they do not tend to mate until they
are seven or eight. Unlike her human counterparts, the age of 18 does not mean any crazy life
changes.
Hippos can live to be around 50 years old in the wild, so Genny still has a long and happy life to
look forward to. As with many other animals in captivity, she may live longer than the average
age. This is due to the diligent care by her caretakers and veterinarians that ensure she has
access to the best nutrition and medication to keep her healthy, happy and well.
