Sweet Pea is currently away from her pool at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation
Center. She is currently receiving medical treatment in Panama City, but she is okay according
to officials at the center.
The loveable ambassador sea turtle is being treated at the Gulf World Marine Institute. The
juvenile sea turtle needs treatment for an esophageal obstruction, a chronic internal condition.
The condition developed after she was caught on a fishing line, it requires occasional medical
assistance to keep functional. It sounds bad, but Sweet Pea is really okay. She has the support
and care of knowledgeable staff to help her through this.
The founder of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center even said, “She’s not in bad
shape or anything. It’s just a matter of what they’re going to do.”
Currently X-rays are being taken to see what the necessary next steps for Sweet Pea are. It is
unclear how long the treatment will take, but eventually she will make her way home to the
Navarre center. It is likely that Sweet Pea will need constant care for the rest of her life. She
was rescued after being found entangled in fishing gear that caused her to lose her left front
flipper and large damage to her left rear flipper. The outer injuries are painful, but the internal
injuries are the ones that will require constant medical assistance over the course of her life.
Please do not leave fishing gear in the water or on the beach, innocent sea turtles can be
severely injured if they are entangled.
