Two sea lion pups were born earlier this summer at the Memphis Zoo. Both of the mothers and
babies are doing well in their home, according to zoo staff.
Remy and Catalina were the two mothers that gave birth to Zoey and Gracie. As the young pups
mature, they will be offered extra privacy behind the scenes of the exhibit.
The two pups were born right in the middle of pupping season. The summer season allows for a
higher survival rate of young sea lions in the wild. The food at this time of year is more plentiful
and the waters are slightly warmer.
The typical weight of a newborn sea lion is between 12 and 20 pounds. The females can grow to
be between 200 and 400 pounds while the males can grow to around 600 to 800 pounds. These
young pups have a long way to go, but hopefully they will reach their full weights without any
problems.
In the wild these animals can live to be around 20 years old. It is possible that these young sea
lions will have the chance to grow even older due to the high-quality care and attention they
will receive from zoo staff throughout their lives.
