A lucky group of free divers encountered a group of friendly orcas off the coast of Cabo San Lucas earlier
this summer. The group happened upon the orcas and then spent almost three hours enjoying the
company of these beautiful creatures.
The group was lead by Regi Domingo, a captain at Pelagic Safari. According to Domingo, the rare
encounter happened roughly five miles offshore in the Sea of Cortez.
Both the orcas and the free divers were curious about their company. The free divers were snapping
pictures and enjoying the view and the orcas were investigating these odd-looking creatures in their
home. Imagine if you were an orca encountering a human in your home, it would be a memorable
experience.
Free divers captured many pictures of the orcas taking a close look at their new friends. The playful pod
seemed to enjoy the encounter before swimming off.
The group consisted of almost 12 orcas. All of the whales were females, except for one juvenile male.
The little pod of orcas has been seen around the Sea of Cortez on many occasions lately. Although these
orcas are likely transient whales, it seems like they have found a nice place to stay for a little while.
