A whale in Newport Beach, California got very close to a gondola full of people last summer. It is difficult to tell from the video, but it looks like the whale was either a fin or minke whale. Whatever kind of whale it was, it was likely traveling through the area on its annual migration.
You can see the whale got very close to the surface. And very close to the gondola. In fact, it looked close enough to touch!
Within a few seconds of starting the video, the beautiful whale skimmed the surface of the water with its dorsal fin. You can see the animal swim by slowly with a gentle flick of its massive tail. The people in the boat were able to glimpse a full view of the entire whale from head to tail.
If you listen to the sound in the video, you can hear the onlookers excitement. It would be an amazing encounter to get that close to such a gentle giant. The close up view of the whale’s face showed some white and brown marks. Although they may look painful, they are actually just a normal part of whale life. The markings can appear with age, much like the wrinkles of older humans.
