Fungie the dolphin, County Kerry, Ireland’s most famous resident, has been spotted with two large gashes on his head following the major storm Ophelia.
Luckily, dolphin skin heals nine times faster than in humans. Their skin constantly flakes and peels as new skin cells replace old cells, so fans need not worry about Fungie’s new scars. In fact, these beauty marks will help the famous dolphin stand out more to tourists. This will shut down any rumors about Fungie being a group of different dolphins happening to pass through the Kerry area. People find it hard to believe that one dolphin stays in the same area for such a long period of time, many of them not knowing dolphins can live up to 48 years. Locals say Fungie has been entertaining the county for 34 years, making his first appearance back in 1983.
It is believed that Fungie was orphaned at a young age off the coast of Kerry and staying in the same spot made him feel more secure in the sheltered harbor. While most dolphins travel in pods, Fungie seems to prefer human companionship. He frequently makes appearances around tourist boats and has playfully interacted with swimmers, divers, kayakers, and surfers. The friendly dolphin has made a name for himself in the small Irish town, earning himself a statue in his honor. Locals guarantee that you’ll see Fungie at least once while visiting. A captain on one of the tour boats even calls to Fungie, similar to calling a dog, and Fungie never fails to make an appearance, seeming comfortable and happy among people.
While Fungie is getting older, he still has time to be the center of tourist attraction in County Kerry. And his fans can rest easy, knowing that he is safe after the strong storm Ophelia that hit the area in mid-October.
