George Clinton, the loggerhead sea turtle, recently returned to Gulf World Marine Institute for a second rehabilitation stay. The turtle was accidentally caught by a fisherman at the M.B. Miller County Pier in Panama City. This is the second time that George Clinton has been caught accidentally. Luckily for him, the staff at Gulf World Marine Institute was happy to help him get back into the ocean quickly.
According to officials, it is very likely that he was swallowed more than one hook based on this pattern of behavior. The representatives from the Gulf World Marine Institute said they had to remove several hooks from the turtle. The turtle stayed at the Institute for a short stay before he was released back into the Gulf of Mexico.
The release took place at the Topsail Hill Preserve in Walton County. Another successful rescue and rehabilitation of a sea turtle by the Gulf World Marine Institute.
Sea turtles are very susceptible to swallowing hooks because they take the bait often. If you happen to hook a sea turtle on your next fishing trip, then call the proper authorities. In Florida, the best organization to call would be the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 888-404-3922.
