A seal made a lucky escape from a killer whale pod via a tour boat! The seal was swimming
for his life when he saw the boat and hopped on the back. The boat’s rear platform was able
to give it a short reprieve from the predatory jaws of the killer whales.
The whale watching tour aboard the boat was lucky enough to watch these events unfold.
The event happened in Fredrick Arm, which is an inlet near Vancouver Island. The tour
guide, Nick Templeman, had this to say about the situation, “I didn’t think he’d make it to
the boat because they cut him off as he was coming to the boat.”
After the seal made it on the platform, the orcas kept following the boat just waiting for the
seal to jump back into the water eventually. The seal decided to wait it out. The boat
operator drove the seal to a new location but the seal was still hesitant to get off. Finally,
the dog on board barked until the seal reluctantly jumped off.
The encounter between the seal and orcas happens in these waters all of the time, but the
lucky group on board got to witness the excitement up close.
