In late May, two Magellanic penguins Roxy and Floyd who live at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, became proud parents to an absolutely adorable chick.
After hatching, it stayed with its penguin parents until the little chick was ready to break from the nest (just for a little while) and go behind the scenes to a nursery where it learned some new things such as accepting whole fish from keepers and swimming in the pools like the big penguins do.
And while you won’t be seeing this Magellanic penguin chick on display if you go to visit the Aquarium before August, you will be able to get a glimpse of this little cutie as they grow on the aquarium’s live-streaming Penguin Chick Webcam courtesy of explore.org, or by watching below!
The aquarium doesn’t yet know the gender of the penguin, but they expect to by the time it’s ready to be introduced into the habitat.
In 2005, the penguin’s mother Roxy arrived at the Aquarium after being rescued from a beach around Ipanema, Brazil and due to health issues, deemed unreleasable. Roxy and Floyd paired up not long after, and have four other offspring (Skipper, Lily, Heidi, and Anderson) that the new chick will be joining come August.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is also offering an awesome chance to donate and “adopt” the chick and provide support to the hard work that they do through their Adopt an Animal program. You could also earn some pretty awesome rewards in return, along with an entry for a chance to meet the chick and other penguins with a feeding and training session.
We’re looking forward to seeing lots more of this little chick, and you can follow the Aquarium of the Pacific on Facebook and Twitter to keep an eye out!
