Earlier this year, two African penguins celebrated an anniversary at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. The two penguins celebrated 27 years in style by taking a walk down memory lane at the aquarium.
Like many other penguin species, African penguins typically mate for life. Charlie and Lizzy at the Georgia Aquarium have been together for close to three decades and their devotion is still strong.
Although African penguins only live to be about 10 to 15 years in the wild, many African penguins in human care live into their late 20s. In fact, Charlie recently celebrated his 30th birthday! Charlie and Lizzy have been together through every phase of their life and they are currently enjoying their golden years together.
In the wild, African penguin populations are struggling to cope with their changing environments. Penguin species around the globe are suffering, and these adorable penguins are no exception. As wild populations struggle, penguins in human care become increasingly important to the genetic pool of these species.
If you get the chance, you should check out these adorable penguins at the Georgia Aquarium! In addition to these cute penguins, you will have the chance to see many other animals at the aquarium. Including whale sharks! It is an amazing sight to behold, so check it out if you have the opportunity.
