Kelly Sommariva, a journalist in Colorado, wasn’t quite expecting her assignment at the Denver Zoo to be one of the most romantic and special moments of her life…but it was!
Kelly was assigned a story at the Denver Aquarium and was supposed to be getting footage of the otters that live there. In the video provided by Cater News, Kelly was filming the otters before she noticed they were swimming around a sign that had a special message from her boyfriend, Mike Jensen.
The sign read, “Hello Kelly! Look at us. Now look at your man. Now back to us. Now back to your man. Now say yes to marrying your man!”
When Sommariva turned around, Jensen was down on one knee holding up a ring.
How did the zoo get these otterly adorable otters to cooperate with the proposal? Simple…treats! The aquarium put treats for the otters underneath Jensen’s sign so it was no hard work to get them to flip it for the big moment, Sommariva said.
“I felt so overwhelmed with happiness when I saw Kelly read that sign,” Raquel Villanueva, Kelly’s co-worker, said of the 2013 moment. “I knew it would be a moment that she could tell people about for years, with the exact same excitement she had that day.”
Today, Jensen and Sommariva are happily married and made sure to pay tribute to the special moment with an otter cake topper at their wedding. They also regularly visit the otters at the aquarium!
