Every year some of the earth’s biggest mammals make their way from Alaska to Mexico… with one goal in mind. They want to make some mammal magic.
Earlier this week, however, several whales stopped short just off the coast of California and got down to business.
About 6 miles off the coast of Newport Beach, Mark Giradeau sent a drone sailing above some procreating gray whales. The footage he captured is both incredible… and intimate.
If you watch the video (below) very closely, you can see the whale’s… AHEM… “Pink Floyd,” or what the whale watching community has so strangely nicknamed the male whale’s member.
It used to be believed that the gray whale mating ritual required three participants. However, this mammal myth has been busted. Apparently, the third wheel is just laying in wait for shot at nature’s dance. It’s stiff sperm competition between male gray whales.
Giradeau managed to sneakily capture the footage from his sailboat. The charter captain commented, “It felt kind of weird flying on them while they were doing their thing. I figured I’d keep filming. It’s something not a lot of people get to see unless you watch National Geographic or an animal wildlife documentary. It was pretty special. The whales almost came close to the boat because they were flipping and turning around. The whales didn’t seem to be distracted at all by our presence.”
