Recently we stumbled upon Pink Tank Scuba, a blog by PT Hirschfield. The Melbourne resident is an underwater photographer and film-maker, that is “Swimming against terminal endometrial cancer one scuba dive at a time.” Hirschfield’s blog is filled to the brim with incredible photos and videos of her diving adventures.
According to PT, several of her friends have self-diagnosed her with a serious case of “OCD” or Obsessive Compulsive Diving. HA! And her resume is living proof of her Master Diving skills and sea-rious passion for underwater adventure. From swimming with great whites and tiger sharks, she’s well on her way to crossing off every item on the ultimate bucket list. Amazingly, PT has also received special training in Underwater Photography, Wreck Diving, Nitrox and Rescue.
There’s basically nothing this girl can’t do!
On one of Hirschfield’s most recent dives, she stumbled across an amazing… and angry… octopus! Just a few minutes into the dive, she noticed a “golden retriever-sized” octopus… and he was HANGRY. The animal, who was just trying to seal the deal on its next meal, soon became annoyed with PT and started to “eyeball” her.

Luckily, PT is a veteran diver and recognized the octopus’ plan of action. It’s never a great idea to interrupt any animals meal time, so PT knew she needed to give the octopus some space. Hirschfield commented about the experience on her blog saying:
“The animal hurled itself towards me like a bowling bowl and scored its intended non-impact strike. I quickly filled my lungs with tanked air to float a meter off the sand as it swam straight through the patch I had been resting on, directly underneath me as I tried to keep its trajectory in focus with my camera. I have no idea what might have happened had I not anticipated the move and acted accordingly. In recent times at this dive site, bold octopuses have been known to confiscate unwary divers’ cameras. But in all honesty, the animal had given fair warning of its intent and somehow knew that I would comply. We had understood each other perfectly. It had asserted its control of the situation and I left it to continue its hunt alone. Though we clearly meant each other no harm, but the time had come to swim in opposite directions.”
There’s no doubt that octopus are intelligent and incredible animals. Not to mention they’re also a tad bit creepy…
