Something unusual happened during the Lofoten Masters surf contest in Unstad, Norway. Let’s just say surfers weren’t the only ones out in the waves on Sunday. Two killer whales showed up to compete as well!
The whales without a doubt thought the surfers were seals and were searching for some prey. It seems the whales were charging at full speed but pulled back when they realized they were humans instead. Norwegian killer whales typically congregate near shore in the winter to feed on prey. Atlantic herring and Norwegian spring-spawning stock are typically their victims, not surfer dudes!
Two of the surfers chilled out in the water while the third surfer got the heck out of there. The one that left put his hands over his head and immediately rode the first wave in. The surfing competition proceeded as normal after the whales made their brief appearance.
