A toy car was the spark that connected a sea otter and two children at the Monterey Bay Aquarium earlier this year.
The otter, Abby, spotted a small yellow car zooming around the edge of its tank. The tiny car was in the hands of two small boys. The boys were visiting the aquarium with their mother, Katie Bettini.
The car was powered by pulling back the wheels and then releasing it to run on its own. Abby the otter saw the little car and started running along with it every time it was released.
Bettini, had this to say about the encounter, “It was completely unexpected! That was not our car. One of my boys found it on the ledge and started playing with it. Abby swam down and wanted to play. It was amazing!”
Abby was entertained by the little yellow car for what seemed like hours. The boys had the chance to interact with the playful otter. Abby is one of six sea otters that live at the aquarium. She was rescued as a newborn in 2007 and raised by SeaWorld San Diego. It is encouraging to see that she is enjoying her rehabilitated life at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
