Whenever the phrase “eyes in the sky” comes into play, most of us immediately reference George Orwell’s 1984 and feel a hint of apprehension.

But before you jump to conclusions, give Belize’s new drones a chance to impress you!

The Government of Belize is set to use new, high-tech drones to enforce fishing regulations in the Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve and other reef systems.

“This exciting new enforcement tool will help the government and local communities protect their most valuable assets – the fisheries and coral reefs of Belize’s coastal waters,” said Dr. Caleb McClennen, Executive Director of WCS Marine Conservation.

This new program, which also happens to be the first use of conservation drones to monitor marine protected areas, utilizes unmanned aerial vehicles to stop unsustainable levels of illegal fishing.

But why are these “police drones” necessary?

Unregulated and unsupported fishing are some of the biggest threats to Belize’s fishing industry and livelihood.

The drones will allow officials to monitor for illegal activity like prohibited conch catches, which are usually hidden by mangrove forests.

And what’s the best part?

Drones cut down on costs!

This major innovation could bring hope countries around the world that depend on the ocean to survive.
