Beach Shows Up For An Afternoon Then Disappears

Winter season in the San Francisco Bay area can sometimes cause beaches to appear out of thin air!

During the colder months this region experiences what is known as “King-tides” and “minus-tides” cause by the gravitational pull from the moon and sun. This in turn causes some areas to flood and others to see waters recede much further than normal.

This isn’t uncommon but rarely happens during the day. A spokeswoman from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area said these extreme tides often occur at night so people hardly ever witness them.

But earlier this week, visitors swarmed to Ocean Beach as the afternoon “minus-tide” revealed a part of the beach that many had never seen in their lifetimes.

The featured image shows the Cliff House, Seal Rocks (the furthest out to sea) and the normal 10 feet deep water that stands between them. The image below was taken from Cliff House looking out towards Seal Rocks.

Now, thanks to the “minus-tide”, we have an image of the below fisherman standing in the most unlikely of places – right in between Cliff House and Seal Rocks.

Pretty incredible, right? Hundreds of people thought so too as they flocked from all along the coast to play in never-before-played-in sand.
