A hungry blue whale was seen feeding off the shore of La Jolla in San Diego, California on Sunday.

A pilot spotted the pod of whales on Sunday afternoon and was able to snap the above photo of one of the majestic animals.

Blue whales are the largest known animals on earth. The species feeds on krill and can consume up to 40 million of the crustaceans a day! The whales can occasionally be spotted off the coast of Southern California primarily between the months of July and September.

The pilot was at a safe distance from the blue whale as to not disturb the mammal. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, viewers should remain at least 100 yards from marine mammals. The photographer was able to snap this incredible photo at a safe distance and adhering to these guidelines.

We are thankful that the pilot was able to spot this blue whale enjoying a mid-afternoon snack. Then again, it would be tough to miss a mammal that is about the size of a basketball court.
