Proof Sanity Still Exists: California “Blackfish” Bill Stalls

In March, Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D) Santa Monica, introduced a bill in the California Legislature that would effectively ban the use of killer whales in public performances and make it mandatory to place all such marine mammals in a sea holding pen to let them live out their days. It would also prohibit the capture in California waters and breeding of whales.

The legislator was guided by the viewing of “Blackfish”, and teamed up with animal activists to draft and support the bill. Nowhere did he demonstrate any unbiased research into the actual science and history relating to the programs at Sea World.

In a written statement, Sea World spokesman David Koontz criticized Bloom for associating with “extreme animal rights activists who regularly campaign against Sea World accredited marine mammal parks and institutions.”

These are the same activists that have partnered in legal action with PETA demanding that animals to be considered “Slaves” under the 13th amendment. They were also against the use of chicken eggs to incubate vaccines that have and continue to save the lives of millions of people from disease.

The referral of this Bill to defer action this year, effectively puts it on the shelf pending further investigation. However, the Assembly Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee suggested that a new bill be introduced next year based on more detailed studies of the potential repercussions on research, the well-being of the 10 whales at Sea World, and its potential damaging effects on the San Diego economy.

You have to be aware that California has destroyed its economy by overregulation and the passing of ridiculous laws regarding so many issues. That’s why the biggest corporations and many small businesses are closing and moving to other states. In other words, the state legislature doesn’t care about potential job losses that could result if such a law is passed.

Remember, these activist are well funded and work full time for extreme animal rights groups. We can’t let our guard down for one moment, stay tuned for continuing updates.
