Explorers Make The DEEPEST Discovery In Czech

Last week, a team of Polish and Czech divers explored deeper than ever before in an underwater cave in Hranice, a small eastern town in the Czech Republic. The team of scuba divers used a ROV, or remotely operated underwater boat, to survey the Hranice Abyss.

Exploring 200 meters at a time, the crew eventually sent the ROV through a limestone sinkhole, where the boat exhausted its cord’s reach… but it did not appear to have hit the bottom. This discovery leads the team to believe that the flooded fissure is at least 404 meters deep, making it the world’s deepest underwater cavity. Call it in to the record book folks!

In a statement made last Friday by one of the explorers, Krzysztof Starnawski said he felt like the “Columbus of the 21st century.” Based on the 59 degree (fahrenheit) water temperatures and the water’s abrasive mineral content, we do believe this is an amazing accomplishment -even if he didn’t discover a new continent.
